Bait by Mark Jenkin

Director Mark Jenkin presents a beautiful film, shooting “Bait” on a hand-cranked 16mm Bolex, and the film was also processed and edited by hand. The coarse and grainy black and white imagery makes the film feel alive and the physical art of the technique aligns perfectly with the themes of the film, as new ways dramatically change a long-held way of life.

In the coastal town of Cornwall, tensions are mounting between the more traditional local residents, who want to keep their way of life, and the posh newcomers from London. The film follows fisherman Martin Ward and his squabbles with the Leighs, the newcomers who have bought his old family home. Throughout the town life is changing to accommodate tourists and part-time residents and Martin is now a fisherman without a boat as his brother has taken their late father's fishing boat to shepherd tourists around, driving a wedge between the brothers. Newcomers party long into the night yet complain of the sounds of boats in the morning while fishing nets become decoration for restaurants.
